Using Social Media Marketing to Increase Traffic
Pretty much everyone hates Social Media Marketing and I am absolutely no exception. Normally, I never recommend that you outsource work, but when it comes to Social Media Marketing, I not only recommend it but wholeheartedly encourage it.
Even if you are interested in using social media, I would still get someone else to do it. This is mainly because playing around on social media and social media marketing are two completely different things. If you don’t know how to do the marketing part of social media well, it will take you so long to learn it, you’ll probably never do it right.
Plus, there is a much more obvious reason. If you are running a business or trying to make money from your website, then you should concentrate on the things that you do well. Or at the very least, the things that you don’t want other people doing for you, like creating content.
Of course, if you are running a blog as a hobby to keep you busy in your old age then, by all means, try social media marketing. There are many courses which can teach you what to do or you can read my book on social media marketing when I have done one.
Why Social Media Marketing Is Important
No matter what you think about or don’t think about social media, there is no way to avoid it. In fact, we have already looked at it when we were talking about making YouTube videos as YouTube definitely works as social media marketing. Let’s look at some different types of social media just in case you don’t know them all.
Facebook is still probably the king of the social media sites. Sure, millennials are moving to other sites such as Instagram, Snapchat or whatever was the new one last week. However, I am going to guess that you are not a millennial and that you are looking for established social media for marketing business websites and blogs. If that’s the case, Facebook is probably the social media company for you.
Most people think that all social media is pretty much the same but that is far from the case. Facebook works on a more personal basis. It also has an older demographic. Twitter is about directing more traffic to your website. It also works extremely well if you want to improve your brand and engage your audience. However, with a younger demographic than Facebook, you may need to decide if what you do is a good fit.
Instagram has around 700 million users and while most of them will not be interested in what you are doing, enough of them might to make Instagram a great social media platform for marketing. Interestingly, the demographics are surprisingly broad, with a high number of users over the age of 40. However, Instagram is definitely a platform for pics so if your blog doesn’t lend itself to images, Instagram may not be for you.
LinkedIn is a social media platform for working professionals. With LinkedIn, it’s all about networking, building connections, and generally doing the things business do but online. If your company is more B2B than B2C, then LinkedIn is by far the best platform for your business. And the good news is that men and women are equally represented on LinkedIn which is not the case on most other platforms, which usually have a bias either to men or women.
If your business is primarily aimed at the female demographic, then Pinterest is absolutely the social media platform for you. Nearly three times as many women use Pinterest than men. And the other bonus is that the women who use Pinterest are reasonably high-earners. Around 60% of them earn over $30,000 and remarkably, about 40% earn over $75,000. If you’re in the health or beauty business, then Pinterest is definitely the platform for you.
I’m not going to include YouTube here because we did an entire chapter on the benefits of creating videos and using them to drive traffic to your website. I am also not going to talk about Snapchat because if you know what Snapchat is and how it works, you shouldn’t really be reading this book.
There are, of course, many other platforms you could look at for ways to use social media marketing to increase traffic but, to be honest, I reckon the five I just mentioned plus YouTube should be more than enough to keep you occupied for the near future.
Social Media Advertising
Another reason why I strongly recommend you get help is that you might want to do paid advertising on social media. Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, and so on are definitely not easy to get right. And while advertising on social media is quite cheap, it can become extremely expensive and you get it wrong.
Getting someone to help you may seem like an expensive option when the alternative is to do it yourself for free. However, trying to do social media advertising yourself will almost certainly end up being a false economy, so get some help!
Do a Social Media Marketing Course
No matter what you decide to do, whether you do your own social media marketing to increase traffic or you pay someone to do it for you, you should have some idea of what social media marketing is all about. And for that reason, I strongly recommend doing some sort of social media marketing course.
If you’re going to try and do your own social media marketing, then doing a course is pretty much a must. And even if you are planning to get someone else to do your marketing, doing a course we’ll help you to understand what your marketer is talking about. Being completely ignorant about something, especially if you’re paying someone else to do something for you, is never a good idea.
The other reason why it’s a good idea to do some sort of social media course is that you will know how to join in. Even if you are paying for someone to do your marketing, it would still be good to follow along so you can see what’s happening, if only for the reason that you can see what your marketer is doing for you.
Finally, you can find lots of social media marketers on places like Facebook but 95% of them are complete rubbish. Ask for recommendations when looking for a marketer; you’ll be surprised how many people are willing to help you find someone worth employing. And if marketers reach out to you, ask for references. If they can’t supply any, don’t use them.
Wrapping It All Up
I’m hoping that the biggest take away you got from this chapter about how to use social media marketing to increase traffic is that you should probably avoid having anything to do with social media marketing. And if you do want something to do with it, it’s probably best if it is only superficial.
Social media marketing is difficult to do and if you don’t know what you’re doing, not only can it become very time-consuming but it can also end up being very expensive, especially if you want to try to do paid social media advertising.
Still, I know there are people who want to learn how to do social media marketing and you may be one of those people. If that’s the case, do everything very slowly and ensure that you know what you are doing before you do it. And if you’re in doubt, don’t take action until you’re sure.
